About speech recognition models
Automatic speech recognition models turn recorded speech into text. Hugging Face also files speaker diarisation pipelines under this tag, which answer "who spoke when" and are used together with a transcription model.
Before you pick one
Languages are in the card, not in the tag
Two models of the same size can differ completely in the languages they handle. The model card lists the supported languages and the error rate on each test set.
Small is normal here
Speech models are far smaller than language models: tens of millions to a few billion parameters. Many run in real time on a laptop processor.
Diarisation models may be gated
Some repositories ask you to accept conditions on Hugging Face before the files can be downloaded. The model page shows when a repository is gated.
Questions readers ask
What is the difference between transcription and diarisation?
Transcription writes down the words. Diarisation splits the recording by speaker without knowing the words. A meeting transcript with speaker labels uses both.
Do these models send my audio anywhere?
Not when you run the weights yourself: that is the point of an open model. A hosted demo or API built on the same model is a different matter and has its own privacy terms.
What does the MLX format mean?
MLX is Apple’s array framework for its own chips. An MLX repository is a conversion meant to run on a Mac with Apple silicon.
