Abstract · as written by the authors

High-quality image editing requires precise modification of target regions while preserving the content of unrelated regions. Existing editing models produce flattened outputs that limit precise local manipulation and layer reuse, while decomposition methods typically optimize layer recovery separately from instruction-driven editing. To this end, we introduce LayerEditor, a unified framework that couples instruction-guided image editing with controllable generation of reusable RGBA layers. At its core, In-Context RGB-Alpha Token Modeling jointly represents the edited canvas and an ordered sequence of RGB-Alpha layers within a single token sequence, enabling semantic edits and explicit control over individual layer content. To retain the pretrained model's editing capability during adaptation to layered outputs, we propose Compositional Edit-Prior Distillation, which transfers its editing prior to both the edited canvas and the image composed from the predicted layers. To support training and evaluation, we construct LayerEditor-100K, a large-scale paired image-editing dataset with ordered RGBA layer annotations, and introduce dedicated benchmarks for layered editing. Extensive experiments demonstrate that LayerEditor maintains strong editing fidelity while generating accurate RGBA layers, supporting both flexible layer-level manipulation and multi-layer decomposition.

Terms in plain language

Automatic

Made by matching the words of the title and abstract against a fixed list of definitions. It does not read the paper and does not change the abstract above.

Distillation
training a smaller model to copy the behaviour of a larger one.
Token
a small unit that a model reads and writes, often a part of a word.
pretrained
the first, large training stage on broad data, before any training for a specific task.
dataset
a collection of examples used to train or test a model.

Questions about this paper

Where can I read the full paper?

On arXiv, under the identifier 2610.24738: the abstract page is https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.24738 and the PDF is https://arxiv.org/pdf/2610.24738. The text on this page is the authors' abstract, not a summary.

Is there code for this paper?

No repository is attached to the paper on Hugging Face. The authors may still have released code; the abstract or the PDF would say so.

What do the upvotes mean?

74 signed-in Hugging Face users upvoted it on the daily list of October 23, 2026. Upvotes measure attention from that community, not peer review.

What are the plain-language terms under the abstract?

Short notes on the technical words of the title and abstract, in everyday English, taken from a fixed list of definitions that we wrote. They are made automatically by matching words, so a note can miss a term or give a meaning that does not fit this paper. The abstract above them is the authors’ text and is not changed.
