Abstract · as written by the authors

Fine-grained multimodal intelligence requires models to both understand a designated region and localize it from language. Existing methods learn these directions with separate objectives and task-specific annotations. We present Generalized CycleGRPO, the first unified reinforcement learning framework coupling region understanding and localization across spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal domains. Given a region, a multimodal large language model generates candidate descriptions and then localizes each description to reconstruct the input region. Reconstruction overlap provides a verifiable reward for captioning, while individual localization rewards improve the inverse mapping. A common region-space formulation extends this cycle from image masks and boxes to video intervals and timestamped spatial evidence, without reference captions or an external language-model judge during reinforcement learning. In videos, the cycle encourages descriptions that distinguish a target event from similar recurrences. We introduce DOVE (Distinctive Occurrence-level Video-caption Evaluation), a human-verified contrastive benchmark for this temporal distinctiveness. CycleGRPO improves SAMTok's overall gIoU from 57.5% to 68.2% on GroundingSuite and average gIoU from 71.2% to 78.7% on GRES. For temporal tasks, it achieves 51.9% tIoU on Charades and 33.3% Temporal Evidence Coverage on DOVE, compared with 45.6% and 14.8% for the Qwen3-VL initialization. These results establish region-text cycle consistency as a general self-evaluation principle for multimodal understanding and localization. Terms in plain language

Automatic

Made by matching the words of the title and abstract against a fixed list of definitions. It does not read the paper and does not change the abstract above.

Multimodal
able to work with more than one kind of data, such as text together with images, audio or video.
reinforcement learning
training by trial and error: good actions earn a reward, and the model adjusts to earn more.
large language model
an AI system trained on very large amounts of text to read and write language.
benchmark
a fixed set of tasks or questions used to compare models on the same test.

Questions about this paper

Where can I read the full paper?

On arXiv, under the identifier 2610.29552: the abstract page is https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.29552 and the PDF is https://arxiv.org/pdf/2610.29552. The text on this page is the authors' abstract, not a summary.

Is there code for this paper?

Yes. The paper's page on Hugging Face links the repository github.com/devinxzhang/CycleGRPO, which had 8 stars when we collected it.

What do the upvotes mean?

3 signed-in Hugging Face users upvoted it on the daily list of October 26, 2026. Upvotes measure attention from that community, not peer review.

What are the plain-language terms under the abstract?

Short notes on the technical words of the title and abstract, in everyday English, taken from a fixed list of definitions that we wrote. They are made automatically by matching words, so a note can miss a term or give a meaning that does not fit this paper. The abstract above them is the authors’ text and is not changed.
